Mari Jaye, 96, recently succeeded in getting SF’s Urban Forestry Council to grant landmark status to her 55 year old tree (one of only 18 trees to be conferred this status in San Francisco.) She planted the tree next to her house along Lombard Street in memory of her husband and children who died in an airplane accident in 1962. Neighbors opposed the tree ostensibly for the potential danger they perceived it presented. However, Jaye suspected the neighbors’ opposition was rooted in their desire for unobstructed views over their fear of falling branches.
